Education, voter mobilization and the plight of undocumented students are priority issues for Maria Elena Coronado. Maria Elena’s leadership journey began while attending Arizona State University. She dedicated endless hours to supporting fellow students and advocating for issues of broader concern to the Latino community. She also became engaged with the United Farm Workers (UFW) while living in California. She honed her leadership skills under the direction of Cesar Chavez and the UFW network. The primary impact of Maria Elena’s efforts can be seen in the thousands of students she has assisted in earning college degrees and advancing their careers. Those individuals have gone on to become leaders in their own right. Maria Elena has supported and led the Los Diablos Alumni Association; served on numerous scholarship selection committees, Board of Directors for Radio Campesina and lent her time and energy to causes and initiatives related to Chicanos Por La Causa and Valle del Sol’s Hispanic Leadership Institute (Class of 2001). Additionally, she dedicates additional efforts in support of the LGBTQ community, cancer survivors and Pat Tillman Foundation.
