Honorable Alfredo Gutiérrez has a long history of service to his community beginning with election to the Arizona State Senate in 1972. Two years later, he was elected to serve as the majority leader and remained in leadership positions until 1986. After politics, he ran a consulting firm, Jamieson and Gutiérrez, until 2000 when he returned to community activism. For seven years, he hosted a Spanish language radio program in Phoenix and was vocal in his opposition to a 2010 state law that required all aliens over the age of fourteen have documentation of their legal status in their possession at all times. Few will forget his immigration updates when he would share descriptions of items found at the Mexico-Arizona border in the hopes that their owners or family members would recognize them and confirm their safe passage. Gutierrez most recently served on the Maricopa County Community College Governing Board. He also is a columnist for La Voz where he covers Arizona immigration policy and issues related to Latinos in the state.
